First off, Thank you to Huion for sending me this tablet to try out! Here’s my review on one of their products; The Kamvas Pro 16. This retails for $469.00 on their site, excluding the stand and glove. As of now, on their Amazon page it retails for $383.66 (Under “Frequently bought together” ) that includes both stand and glove.
*SET-UP*
Set-up is easy with the Kamvas’ all-in-one cable! One end attaches to the tablet monitor and the other end splits into three cables (two attaches to you computer; usb +hdmi port , one attaches to a wall plug.) I think this is excellent because it gives you a lot less hassle untangling cables on your desk (if you ever have a messy desk like I do lol.) And all that’s left is to install the driver and you’re good to go!
I often work on my IMac desktop. I have no idea if there were any Apple desktops that had an HDMI port but all I know mine doesn’t but instead has two lightning ports. So I had to go out an HDMI adapter. Apple’s Lightning Digital AV adapter will cost you $49! (not including tax) But I found a slightly cheaper alternative at Target if you’re looking to save some bread; Phillips HDMI to USB-C adapter. Now I know little to nothing about the difference with Lightning and USB-C but the USB-C adapter works just as fine.
*CUSTOMIZATION SETTINGS*
Kamvas has six hot keys and a touch bar. Customization is also easy. When you open up your preferences, you’re greeted with a picture of the tablet itself. You click on the button you want to customize and a window will pop up. Simple.
At the very bottom of these hot keys is a button to change the function of the touch bar. That’s when I ran into my first problem; The zoom in/zoom out and brush size adjustment function isn’t working. The only touch bar function working was scrolling up/down. I’ve guessed that maybe I was using a Mac. I switched over to my PC (as evident in this video) and voila! all touch bar functions worked! I relayed this message to Huion and they’ll look into the problem.
*TABLET PEN + PEN PRESSURE*
The tablet pen has two customizable buttons. It comes with a pen stand and in it are a few nib replacements. It has 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity with tilt support. I was sliiiiiightly struggling with the pen pressure. My Wacom Intuos 5 pro has the same level of pressure sensitivity. With Kamvas, the feel was not the same. I’d say it was more like 4096. (Here’s a video to show you what I mean ua-cam.com/video/zViM8X_w2EQ/v-deo.html ) BUTTS I do not claim it is 4096. I tried messing with the sensivity settings but nothing came close to the pen pressure I’m used to. Pen tilt was sometimes a bit jumpy at the slightest wrist rotation. These are just nit picky bits for me! You might not even mind it at all.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall I think it’s a great tablet for digital art starters to intermediate hobbyists. All artistic levels really. You save about $200 from Wacom’s 16 inch screen tablet.
